How to Download Your VA Medical Records(GENESIS)

How to Download VA Medical Records Online

Veterans can securely access and download medical records online through VA.gov using the My HealtheVet system. This process allows you to review healthcare documentation, download visit summaries, save medical files for personal records, and share documentation with healthcare providers when needed.

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for locating and downloading your VA medical records.

Before You Begin

Before accessing your records, make sure you have:

  • A verified VA.gov account
  • Your login credentials
  • Access to your authentication method for multi-factor authentication
  • A secure device to download and store your records

Step 1 — Sign In to VA.gov

Open your web browser and navigate to VA.gov.

Select the Sign In option located at the top of the page and enter your account credentials.

You may be required to complete multi-factor authentication before continuing.

Step 2 — Open My HealtheVet

After signing in, locate your name in the upper-right corner of the screen.

Select your name to open the account dropdown menu.

From the dropdown menu, select My HealtheVet.

Step 3 — Open the Medical Records Section

Inside My HealtheVet, scroll down until you locate the Medical Records section.

Select the Medical Records option to open your available healthcare documentation.

Step 4 — Select the Type of Medical Record

Inside the Medical Records section, choose the category of records you want to review or download.

Available records may include:

  • Lab and test results
  • Provider visit summaries
  • Care summaries and clinical notes
  • Medication history
  • Immunization records
  • Allergy information

Step 5 — Open the Medical Record or Report

Select the specific record, report, or visit summary you want to download.

Review the information to confirm it contains the records you need before downloading the file.

Step 6 — Download or Print the Medical Record

Once the medical record is open, locate the Download or Print option on the page.

Select the option to download the file to your device. Most records will download as PDF documents.

Choose a secure location on your computer, tablet, or mobile device to save the file.

Important: Downloaded medical records may contain sensitive personal health information. Always store downloaded files securely and avoid saving medical records on shared or public devices.

Troubleshooting Access Issues

If you are unable to access your records or complete the download process:

  • Verify your login credentials are correct
  • Ensure multi-factor authentication was completed successfully
  • Try using a different web browser
  • Clear your browser cache and cookies
  • Disable pop-up blockers if downloads are not appearing
