How to Download Your VA Rating Decision Letter (RDL)

A Rating Decision Letter (RDL) is the official letter a Veteran receives from the VA outlining the decision made on a disability claim, including the reasoning and evidence behind the decision.

Follow the steps below to locate and download your Rating Decision Letter from VA.gov.

Step 1: Go to VA.gov

Open your browser and go to www.va.gov.

Step 2: Sign In

Click Sign in, typically located in the top-right corner of the screen.


Step 3: Use Your Existing Login

Sign in using one of the following:

  • ID.me
  • Login.gov
  • DS Logon

Tip: Ask the Veteran which login they already have. There is no need to create a new account if one already exists.


Step 4: Open VA Benefits and Health Care

Toward the top-left of the page, click VA Benefits and Health Care.


Step 5: Select Disability

From the dropdown menu, choose Disability.


Step 6: Check Claim Status

A gray menu will appear. Select Check your claim, decision review or appeal status.



Step 7: Open Your Claim Letters

On the next page, find the section titled Check your claim, decision review, or appeal status and click Your claim letters.


Step 8: Download Your VA Claim Letters

Under the Your claim letters section, select Download your VA claim letters.


Step 9: Download the Notification Letter

Download any available notification or decision letters listed on the page.

If the Veteran cannot locate the correct letter or is unsure which document to download, they should contact their primary point of contact for assistance.
